controversy centered on a section which in its original form would allow the attorney general to seek court injunctions against a wide range of civil rights violations The Senate limited the injunction provision to voting rights and added that jury trials must be granted in most criminal contempt of court cases including many that have nothing to do with civil rights The compromise version slated for a House vote Tuesday would limit the jury trial provision to voting rights cases alone Also it would allow a judge to try an alleged violator without a jury But if the defendant was found guilty he could get a new trial with a jury if the judge sentenced him to a jail term of more than 45 days or fined him more than $300 With the jury trial the defendant could get a maximum
