6 THE COMMERCIAL 'APPEAL, MEMPHIS, SATURDAY MORNING, JUNE 3, 1944 HEARINGS SCHEDULED ON DRAINAGE MEASURE Funds For Districts Would Be Interest-Free 30 Years From Commercial Appeal June hearings on Eastland-Abernethy drainage will be started Monday by a subcommittee of the Senate Agriculture Committee. Senator Stewart Tenn.) is chairman of the subcommittee. The bill provides that the Government shall lend drainage districts money for their work Interest-free for 30 years. This is the same provision under which for many years the Government has loaned money to irrigation projects in the West while Southern drainage districts were forced borrow their funds in the open market and paid high interest rates. Administration of the funds would be under the Soil Conservation Department of the Agriculture Department.

JOHN BRINEY Retired Memphis Grocer Dies At His Home John Briney, retired Memphis wholesale grocer, died hat 4:30 yesterday afternoon at his home. 2380 Forrest. He was 76 and had been in ill health several months. Born in Kentucky, Mr. Briney came to Memphis 56 years ago from Cincinnati.

He was a member of the Merton Avenue Christian Church. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Lila Briney; three sons, Chester Briney, Memphis; Edward T. Briney, Murfreesboro, and Matt R. Briney, Louisville, two daughters, Miss Lila Mae Briney and Miss Lillian Briney, Memphis; two brothers, the Rev.
