  1. Draw opens up - England's potential path through the knockoutspublished at 07:35 26 June

    England 0-0 Slovenia

England have topped Group C at Euro 2024 - and results elsewhere have handed Gareth Southgate's side a path through the knockouts which avoids many of the major teams.

Spain, Germany, Portugal and France are all on the other side of the draw and England cannot play any of the quartet before the final.

After topping Group C, the Three Lions now need to win three knock-out games - the last-16, quarter-final and semi-final - to try and earn a place in the final in Berlin on 14 July:

    • Last 16 - England will face the Netherlands, or whoever finishes third in Group E, at 17:00 BST on Sunday in Gelsenkirchen. As it stands, Romania, Belgium, Slovakia and Ukraine are all locked on three points each in Group E so it could yet end up being any one of those four.
    • Quarter-final - They will take on the winner of Switzerland's game against Italy, who beat England on penalties at Wembley to win the last European Championship. A last-eight tie would take place on Saturday, 6 July, in Dusseldorf (20:00 BST).
    • Semi-final - Group D winners Austria are on England's side of the draw, along with whoever tops Group E winner, the runner-up of Group F and one of Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia and the Netherlands. Romania, Belgium, Slovakia and Ukraine are all currently on three points in Group E, while Turkey are currently second in Group F. If England reach the last four, their semi-final will be played in Dortmund on Wednesday, 10 July (20:00 BST).

    England 0-0 Slovenia

As mentioned, a lot of opinions have been expressed about England's current struggles and what Gareth Southgate needs to do to help the undoubted attacking talent within the squad catch fire.

The good thing is, he now has another five days to work with the squad before Sunday's last-16 tie in Gelsenkirchen.

  4. 'Unusual environment' - booed Southgate on cups thrown at himpublished at 07:09 26 June

    07:09 26 June

    England 0-0 Slovenia

Some England fans' reactions to the team's performances at Euro 2024 are "creating an unusual environment" which is "causing an issue for the group", says manager Gareth Southgate.

His side finished top of Group C on Tuesday after a goalless draw against Slovenia followed a 1-1 stalemate with Denmark in their previous group-stage game.

Southgate's side were booed off, and some empty cups were thrown at the Three Lions boss following another below-par display.

"I'm not going to back away from it," he said. "The most important thing is the supporters stay with the team."

  5. England frustrated in Slovenia draw but still top grouppublished at 07:06 26 June

    07:06 26 June

    England 0-0 Slovenia

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Cologne Stadium

England moved into Euro 2024's last 16 at the top of Group C - but it was only achieved after another drab display with a draw against Slovenia in Cologne.

Gareth Southgate's side offered up slightly more than in the abysmal performance against Denmark but once again it was nowhere good enough to justify England's status as pre-tournament favourites.

They were laboured and only showed quality in flashes, namely in the first half when a slick passing move ended with Bukayo Saka's goal being ruled out for offside.

For the second game in a row, England felt real hostility from supporters who backed them magnificently during the game but made their feelings clear after the final whistle.

After boos at the break, supporters let Southgate know what they thought when he went to applaud them at the end, with a couple of empty drinks cups aimed his way from the stands.

Conor Gallagher failed to justify his inclusion and was replaced at half-time, with the introduction of Manchester United teenager Kobbie Mainoo providing more urgency after the break.

England were also short on creativity in a group where no team scored more than one goal in a game for the first time in the competition's history.

Denmark's 0-0 draw with Serbia means they finish second and Slovenia qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.

It was a good night in other respects for England, with results elsewhere meaning the dangerous quartet of France, Spain, Germany and Portugal have dropped into the other side of the draw.

England's last-16 opponents are currently the Netherlands - but that could change after the final round of matches.

  6. Good morningpublished at 06:59 26 June

    06:59 26 June

"A lot of England fans have been left a little bit confused after that, a little bit uncertain, but listen, it's tournament football, the good old cliche is England are still right in it...there is at least one more game to go."

There are plenty of strong opinions out there this morning after what Izzy Christiansen described on Football Daily as a "confused" England performance in Tuesday night's 0-0 draw with Slovenia in Cologne.

But the fact remains that the football gods were smiling on the Three Lions as their point against a side ranked 57th in the world proved enough for Gareth Southgate's side to finish top of Group C and in what looks to be the right half of the knockout draw.

Stick with us as we pick our way through the reaction, and please have a listen to the latest edition of Football Daily at the Euros, which sums up all of the key events and post-match interviews from Cologne.
